Historical Overview

Zinkiv Stone

Hidden beneath the canopy of a mixed forest on the slopes of the Kremenets Hills lies Zinkiv Stone, one of the most remarkable natural landmarks of the Dermansko-Ostrozkyi National Nature Park. Rising more than two metres high and measuring nearly five metres in diameter, this massive limestone boulder is surrounded by clusters of smaller rocks, creating a landscape that feels both ancient and mysterious.

The story of Zinkiv Stone began more than 10 million years ago, when the territory of today’s national park lay beneath the waters of the ancient Sarmatian Sea. During that time, layers of limestone gradually formed, eventually giving rise to the rock we see today. If you look closely at its surface, you can still find traces of that distant past – fossilized shells of mollusks and other marine organisms that lived here millions of years ago.

The protected woodland surrounding the stone covers more than 50 hectares and is an important natural habitat. Mixed forests of oak, hornbeam, and pine dominate the landscape, while some areas preserve old-growth stands that have remained largely untouched for generations. More than fifty bird species inhabit these forests, and the woodland floor is home to orchids and other rare plants.

For visitors, Zinkiv Stone is much more than a geological landmark. It offers a chance to slow down, walk through ancient forests, and encounter a landscape shaped over millions of years. For researchers, it remains an important site for studying the region’s geology, ecosystems, and biodiversity.

The Legend of Zinkiv Stone

Like many remarkable places, Zinkiv Stone has its own story.

According to local legend, a young military leader named Zinko and his warriors sought shelter beneath the enormous boulder during a battle against the Mongol-Tatar army in the valley of the Zbytenka River. The rock protected them in their moment of greatest danger, and ever since then, local people have believed that the stone bears the name of its legendary defender.

Whether history or legend, the story adds another layer to the place. Standing beside the ancient boulder, it is easy to understand why generations of people have looked at it and seen more than just stone – they have seen memory, protection, and the enduring spirit of the land.
