Historical Overview

Liuchyn, Church of the Protection of the Holy Mother of God, 1877

The village of Liuchyn, located near Ostroh, was historically part of the estates of the Princes of Ostroh. As early as the sixteenth century, it was mentioned among their possessions, while the local parish played an important role in the spiritual life of the region.

The wooden Church of the Protection of the Holy Mother of God was built in 1877. It is one of the few well-preserved examples of traditional nineteenth-century wooden sacred architecture in Volyn. Although modest in size, the church blends harmoniously into the surrounding landscape and retains the distinctive features of the region’s traditional folk architecture. Beside the church stands an old stone cross, which local residents associate with the Cossack era.

Although the present church dates from the nineteenth century, an Orthodox place of worship had existed in Liuchyn much earlier. This is evidenced by seventeenth- and eighteenth-century icons and other church artefacts that originated from the previous church. Of particular artistic significance was the eighteenth-century Baroque iconostasis, which combined the traditions of Ukrainian folk icon painting with the aesthetics of the Baroque period. Its festal tier was distinguished by expressive imagery, vivid colours, and profound psychological depth – hallmarks of Ukrainian sacred art of that era.

During the 1980s, part of the church’s historic interior was transferred to the collections of the State Historical and Cultural Reserve of Ostroh. Among its most valuable treasures is the seventeenth-century icon Christ Emmanuel, now preserved in the museum’s collection as an important testimony to the ancient artistic traditions of Volyn.

Today, the Church of the Protection of the Holy Mother of God remains an active place of worship while also serving as an important historical and cultural monument, preserving the centuries-old spiritual heritage of the Ostroh region.
